Fishing Ketchikan, Alaska in July | Peak Season
If you ask ten different Alaskan fishing guides what their favorite month is, you might get ten different answers. But if you ask when the water feels the most alive—when the salmon are running hard, the halibut are feeding aggressively, and the weather is typically at its best—the answer is almost always July.
Here at Anglers Adventures, July is the true peak of the summer fishing season in Ketchikan. The spring transition is over, and the rich waters surrounding Knudson Cove are teeming with baitfish, bringing massive schools of predators right to our doorstep. If you are planning a 2026 trip and wondering, “What fish are biting in Ketchikan in July?”, here is a breakdown of exactly what we target on the F/V Sierra Dawn during the mid-summer rush.
The King Salmon (Chinook) Are Still Here—and They’re Big
While June is famous for the early King Salmon run, July is historically an excellent time to target these massive, heavy-hitting fish. By July, the Kings we catch are often deep-bodied and well-fed, having gorged on herring and needlefish.
2026 July King Salmon Limits
Under the 2026 Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) regulations, starting July 1st, non-resident anglers are permitted an annual harvest limit of one King Salmon (28 inches or greater).
The Silver Salmon (Coho) Arrive in Force
If there is one reason to book a July fishing charter in Ketchikan, it’s the arrival of the Silver (Coho) Salmon.
Silvers are legendary for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic fights. When you hook a Silver, expect it to break the surface, tail-walk, and put your gear to the test. In early July, they average 6 to 10 pounds, but they are hungry and travel in large schools. If we find the school, the action can be fast and furious, with multiple rods bending at once.
Non-Stop Action with Pink (Humpy) and Chum Salmon
If you are bringing kids or novice anglers on a family fishing charter, July is the perfect time.
Pink Salmon (Humpies) return in massive numbers. They average 3 to 6 pounds and are arguably the most willing biters in the ocean. Chum Salmon (Dog Salmon) also show up in mid-to-late July. Chums are notoriously tenacious fighters and can easily push past 12 pounds, providing an incredible battle on light tackle.
Bottom Fishing: Halibut, Lingcod, and Rockfish
Salmon aren’t the only draw in July. The warmer summer months mean excellent bottom fishing.
- Halibut: July is prime time for dropping baits deep for Pacific Halibut. The 2026 regulations allow for one halibut per person per day (excluding Thursdays, which are closed for retention). Whether you want a “chicken” (smaller, perfectly eating-sized halibut) or want to hunt for a “barn door” monster, July offers great opportunities.
- Lingcod: These prehistoric-looking predators are fiercely territorial. With the season open (May 16 – Nov 30), July is a great time to pull up a monster Lingcod from the rocky structures.
- Rockfish: Pelagic rockfish (like Black Bass) provide consistent, year-round action, and July is no exception. They make for incredible fish tacos back at the lodge!
Why Fish Out of Knudson Cove in July?
Downtown Ketchikan can get incredibly busy in July with cruise ships and downtown charters fighting for space. Because Anglers Adventures operates out of Knudson Cove Marina, we are already located just minutes from the best fishing grounds. We spend less time running the boat and more time actually fishing.
Plus, July weather in Southeast Alaska is as good as it gets. While you should always pack your rain gear (we provide it on the boat just in case!), July offers some of our warmest, calmest days on the water, making it comfortable for everyone aboard.
